Convener's Corner — January 2013

Blessings and Happy New Year!

Yes, this is the time of year when we welcome all things new…the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; the start of a new calendar year; the setting of new resolutions (which most of us won’t keep); and a new sense of hope that this coming year will be a great one filled with answered prayers, good fortune and blessings. This is also the time of year when our Via de Cristo ministry is very busy. We have teams in each of our three districts preparing for weekends. That means churches are being prepped, rectors and team members are being called, rollos are being written, palanca is being gathered, weekenders are being sponsored, and the Holy Spirit is moving through our 4th Day Community. Yes, indeed, it is a busy time of year. But as a ministry, our focus is not on the weekend, but rather the journey which is a life in Christian living. The weekend may be a spark to revitalize that journey or even to begin on that journey, but the real reward is what comes after the weekend – it is moving back into our environment with the new-found enthusiasm we have as Christians and the deep understanding of the love and grace that our Lord provides to us. Yes, the weekend is full of excitement, surprises, and heartfelt emotions; but each of these is meant to better prepare us for what lies ahead. The journey is the satisfying and comforting part – the part where we live in God’s grace and share His grace with others.

Which brings me back to those resolutions that are set at the beginning of the year. I would pray that this year we make real resolutions - ones that we can keep and live throughout the year. Make them heartfelt and stretch yourself to attain your resolutions. Focus on the journey with your resolutions. Be an example of “Christ with clothes on”! Live the Christian ideal! Change your environment and live in Christian community with your brothers and sisters! Join a Renewal Group! Make a friend, be a friend, and bring a friend to Christ! These are real resolutions that will not only change us, but also have an impact on those around us.

Celebrate all that is good around us as we enter this new year. Take part in an upcoming weekend by serving on team, sponsoring a weekender, providing palanca, showing up at the Sunday serenade, or praying for God’s presence on all who are involved in the weekend.

I would be remiss if I did not offer my sincere gratitude to all who have given freely of the gifts they have through their support of our Annual Appeal, United Way contributions, and as part of the Thrivent Choice program. Your financial gifts allow us to continue touching lives through Via de Cristo. Thank you!

Last, please remember that our Via de Cristo website is updated often with current information and our Facebook site is fully functional. These are both great ways to stay in touch with our ministry.

Blessings to all!
